Maths competitions
AMC 8 and AMC 10 preparation
The American Mathematics Competitions (AMC), run by the Mathematical Association of America, are taken by students worldwide. They reward creative problem solving under time pressure, and a strong AMC 10 or AMC 12 score is the route to the AIME.
- AMC 8
- 25 questions, 40 minutes, grade 8 and below
- AMC 10
- 25 questions, 75 minutes, grade 10 and below
- AMC 8 score
- 1 point per correct answer (max 25)
- AMC 10 score
- 6 per correct, 1.5 per blank (max 150)
AMC 8 vs AMC 10
The AMC 8 covers middle-school number, geometry, counting and logic. There is no penalty for guessing, so every question should be answered.
The AMC 10 adds algebra, harder geometry, number theory and probability. A blank answer earns 1.5 points and a wrong answer earns nothing, so knowing when to leave a question blank is part of the strategy.
How to prepare
- Work through past AMC papers by topic before attempting full papers.
- Learn the standard tools: complementary counting, similar triangles, modular arithmetic and casework.
- Sit full papers under strict timing: 40 minutes for AMC 8, 75 minutes for AMC 10.
- After each paper, redo every question you missed or skipped, then compare methods.
